The Feudal Sights & Modern Attractions of Tokyo

In my opinion, Tokyo attractions seem to be divided into two categories: feudal and modern. Its feudal sights include a number of shrines, temples and imperial residences, holdovers from the days of the shoguns. They make an interesting contrast with the busy flash of other highlights such as the Ginza and Roppongi districts.

The major feudal highlights include the Asakusa Kannon Temple, the Imperial Palace, the Yasukuni Shrine and the Meiji Jingu Shrine. There is also the Edo-Tokyo Museum, which preserves the history of Tokyo’s Edo Period. You might be tempted to regard Tokyo’s temples with a “seen one, seen ‘em all” attitude, but take some time to appreciate their quiet beauty and significance to the Japanese people.

While reverently appreciating Tokyo’s Buddhist and Shinto shrines and monuments is important, so is getting feel for Tokyo’s ultra-modern flavor. The Ginza district and the Harajuku neighborhood are prime shopping and entertainment hubs. In the latter, Sundays are the best day to visit, as the youth flock to this area clad in the height of fashion. For most people (especially people like my parents), these kids look they’ve come from outer space, but that’s part of what makes this city really neat. Beautiful gardens such as the ones in Shinjuku park exist in the same city as 20-somethings who look like they’ve traveled here from the year 3000.
